Parent Letter - December 4, 2018

December 4, 2018
Dear Parents and Guardians:
We want to make you aware of an incident at Mercer County Senior High School investigated today.  Two students reported to a school administrator that they overheard a student say that he had a gun in his backpack.  The administrator notified the School Resource Officer (SRO), who immediately isolated the student and started an investigation.  Through the investigation, it was determined that there was no gun and there was no credible threat toward the students or staff.  We are thankful that our students reported these comments to our administrator so we were able to investigate the report.  We continue to have conversations with students about how inappropriate these types of statements are in this day and time.  Many times comments like the one above may start as a joke, but as the story spreads from one student to another, the context of the 'joke' is lost and students become scared by the thought of another student having a gun in the building.  Because of this, there are school and legal consequences for such statements.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 859-733-7000.
