8th graders at KMS recently got a good dose of reality. Youth Service Center Coordinator, Allison Hazelwood hosted the annual Reality Fair for 8th graders at King MIddle School and Burgin Middle.
Members from the Mercer community volunteered their time to come in and help students to establish a career, family, and all the responsibilities that come with being an adult. Students were preassigned a career and family and from those, they had to visit various businesses.
Some students had a higher paying job, but had to help pay for childcare for three children. Some students had an average paying job but had to deal with renting a home and taxes.
The Reality Fair is set up to have community members work with the youth of the community to give them a dose of reality. This lesson helps students to understand about balancing their budgets and having money for groceries and electricity is more important than that brand new car.
