Prior to going to BCHS, he taught Social Studies at Harrodsburg High School from 1995-2004. At Harrodsburg, he was Athletic Director for 2 years, head boys basketball coach for 7 years, head baseball coach for 2 years, assistant basketball coach for 4 years, and assistant football coach for 4 years. Additionally, during his tenure at Mercer County High School, he was assistant boys basketball coach for 5 years, assistant girls basketball coach for 4 years, assistant baseball coach for 3 years, and head girls golf coach for 1 year.
Tatum is glad to be back. He stated, “ I am truly honored and humbled to be selected as the next principal at Mercer County Senior High School. As either a student or staff member, I have spent 29 of my years life in this school system. I am excited to be back where it all started and I cannot wait to begin my new role.”
He's eager to get started and has set forth both short and long-term goals. “The goals that I have for Mercer County Senior High are to prepare students for successful transition after graduation in a global economy. Whether that be college, technical school, work force, or military. We will provide leadership for a high school that the community, staff and students have pride. Additionally, we will provide a safe learning environment for our students with a culture and climate of high expectations. Our students will compete at the highest level in academics, athletics and other extra-curricular activities. We will challenge our student to become productive citizens that make a difference in our community,” Tatum said.
Not only is he happy to be back, Superintendent Dennis Davis is excited to have him. Davis said, “I am thrilled to have Spencer Tatum as our next high school principal. His integrity and professionalism are impeccable. He will do a tremendous job of leading the high school forward. With our administrative team of Lee Goss, Terry Yeast, Jaziel Guerra and Spencer Tatum, great things are ahead of us.”
Tatum and his wife, Paula Thompson Tatum, reside in Mercer County and have three sons, Seth, Nathan and Andrew.
