From the Ground Up... Students Build New Greenhouse
Mercer County Day Treatment students recently held an open house to display their new greenhouse. The greenhouse is entirely student-built and partially designed by students in Day Treatment. The students designed the frame the Greenhouse sits on as well as the walkway leading to it. This was a very complex task, which took about six weeks to finish. The students plan to grow hydroponically this winter. These are cold crops, lettuce, kale, and spinach and in the spring the students will grow flowers and starter plants.
Additionally, the students are experimenting with heating the greenhouse without electricity. Rocket stoves, cold frames, heat sink and thermal mass are being considered as a method to heat the building.
Students Cody Maxwell and Jacob Davis conducted the tours during the open house event.
